Obamacare Gets It Right

I never thought I would say those words. But a recent series of events has shown me that Obamacare does have at least one redeeming feature. It makes an attempt to force people to have health insurance. When I look at my car insurance bill I see that about 40% of my premium is used to provide for those who have no insurance.

I have a feeling that it is the same with health insurance. My daughter hurt her knee skiing. Our family has a high deductible plan that also has a relatively high premium. The anesthesiologist was not even covered under the plan at all. Her accident set us back quite a bit financially.

I know someone who got hurt. His family has no insurance. They can afford it, just as we can, but they choose not to in order to save money. Because they do not have insurance the hospital slashed their medical bills. I would not be surprised if they ended up paying less than we did. This situation seems very unfair to me.

If health insurance is anything like car insurance I am forced to pay not only for my own injuries but also for the injuries of all those who choose to go without insurance. Obamacare is trying to address this issue. In this area at least it has done one thing right.

Republicans are now in the process of attempting to repeal Obamacare. I can understand their logic in doing so. However, I have not seen any type of plan that they have that will address this issue of the uninsured.

Whether it is Obamacare or some other plan something needs to be done about the large number of American citizens who live off of the hard work of others. I do not go to work on a daily basis so that I can provide for someone else who does not.

Our economy is based on a free-enterprise system. But our health care system, just like car insurance, is based on social policies. Because health care is socialistic everyone needs to contribute. Otherwise one person ends up providing for another.

Whatever type of health plan that may come next needs to address this one issue. Everyone needs to provide their fair share whenever possible. Obamacare may be the worst health care policy ever devised but in this one area it attempts to do the right thing.
